Mark Whicker – Winner Of “The Mulligan” (By A Landslide)

Mark Whicker - Winner of The Mulligan

Mark Whicker - Winner of The Mulligan

I would like to congratulate Mark Whicker, a sports columnist for the OC Register, on writing one of the worst articles… well, ever.

Congratulations, Mark, on instantly becoming a web sensation for posting a half-assed article relating Jaycee Dugard’s ordeal to everything she had missed in the sports world during her gruesome captivity.

For those of you who have not read the article:

ocRegister: Many odd things have happened in sports the past 18 years

For a follow-up, I believe Mark Whicker will be writing a new play about a young girl who reads Anne Frank’s Diary, and how this girl would love to let her know about all of the amazing sports moments she had missed while she was hiding in terror from the Nazi occupation forces.

An excerpt from the opening monologue:

“If only Anne Frank could have known about the Yankees’ World Series win over the dreaded St. Louis Cardinals mere months after she went into hiding, perhaps the world would not have seemed so dim.”

Congratulations again, Mark.

Google Wins Mulligan Award - Steps In Pooh

Google News has to be the clear winner today in the race for the coveted Mulligan Award.  Somebody must have had a good chuckle at this headline summary when they were posting it onto the Google page.

Reading Pooh? I have heard of people reading tea leaves before but never this. New Age philosophy has gone too far. No wonder the guy died. Do you have any idea how many germs there are in a pile of that stuff?

Cutler Articles Spawn Bad Article Titles – Chicago Sun Times Writer Is The Winner

The Mulligan Award Goes To... Mike Mulligan

The Mulligan Award

During the height of its newsworthiness there were well over a thousand articles written on the Jay Cutler trade to the Chicago Bears. That number is probably closer to the thousands. Some of these articles were well written, some were not. Some had catchy titles, and some had straightforward titles.

I had a title was neither catchy nor straightforward. Just a bit dumb.

Sarcastiholic.com – Denver Broncos’ Wish Is Cutler’s Demand

I can say though, that it was better than one published by Mike Mulligan over at the Chicago Sun Times. This had to be, hands down, the winner for the dumbest title to a Jay Cutler article I had read:

Chicago Sun Times – Finally, Bears have a new Jay of hope

Finally, Bears have a new Jay of hope…

I’m left speechless (almost).

I can only imagine Mike sitting there behind his desk, and giving himself a little punch in the arm at how clever he was for coming up with that one.

My article title was dumb. I expect it to be. I’m not a professional journalist that makes their living writing articles and coming up with catchy and thought provoking things to say. He does.

C’mon Mike… Surely there was a part of you that told you not to name the article that. Wasn’t there?

Oh, well. Congratulations, anyway Mike.

In your honor, I will now create an award for “dumb decisions that you would like to take back.” I give you… The Mulligan

Good luck winning next time, Mike.
